The Ramshorn Snail (family Planorbidae) is a peaceful, hardy freshwater snail that is both decorative and highly functional, making it a popular addition to planted and community aquariums. Juvenile ramshorns are tiny and translucent, often hitchhiking unnoticed on live plants, while adults develop their signature flat, spiral shell shaped like a ram’s horn, typically reaching about ½–1 inch in diameter. Thanks to selective breeding, adults are available in a wide range of attractive colors—including red, blue, pink, brown, and spotted varieties—with body coloration that can be black or red depending on genetics.

  • Ramshorn snails are completely peaceful and make excellent cleanup‑crew members, grazing on soft algae, biofilm, leftover fish food, and decaying plant matter throughout the aquarium. They are extremely adaptable and beginner‑friendly, thriving in stable freshwater with temperatures of roughly 68–82°F (20–28°C), a pH around 7.0–8.0, and consistent water quality. Ramshorn snails require minimal care and no special feeding in established tanks, and they are compatible with most peaceful fish, shrimp, and plants. While their rapid reproduction means populations should be monitored, in balanced numbers Ramshorn Snails offer a unique combination of visual interest and practical utility, making them an excellent low‑maintenance addition to freshwater aquariums.
