The Malaysian Trumpet Snail (Melanoides tuberculata) is a hardy, peaceful freshwater invertebrate valued for both its subtle appearance and its practical benefits in the aquarium. Juveniles are tiny and often go unnoticed, with slim, pointed shells that blend easily into the substrate. As they mature, adults develop an elongated, cone‑shaped “trumpet” shell, typically ranging in shades of brown, gray, cream, or dark speckling, sometimes with faint striping or reddish accents—functional rather than flashy, but well suited to life on and beneath the substrate. Fully grown individuals usually remain under an inch in length, making them suitable for tanks of all sizes.

Malaysian Trumpet Snails are completely peaceful and highly beneficial tank inhabitants. They spend much of their time burrowing through sand or fine gravel, where they aerate the substrate, prevent harmful gas buildup, and consume leftover food, decaying plant matter, and soft algae. Exceptionally adaptable, they thrive in a wide range of freshwater conditions, with optimal parameters generally including temperatures around 72–82°F (22–28°C), a pH of roughly 7.0–8.0, and stable water quality. They require no special feeding in well‑maintained aquariums and are compatible with most peaceful community fish and shrimp. While their rapid reproduction means populations should be monitored, in balanced numbers Malaysian Trumpet Snails are one of the most effective low‑maintenance cleanup crew members available, making them an excellent functional addition to planted and community aquariums alike.
