Apistogramma baenschi - Inka50 (previous name). These fish are also known as the Inca or Inka 50 Dwarf Cichlid, is prized by aquarists for its striking and vivid coloration. Mature males display a brilliant combination of yellow-orange and metallic blue hues, complemented by an exaggerated, flowing dorsal fin and a distinct red band along the edge of their tail. Females, while smaller and less colorful, are still attractive and develop a bright yellow with prominent black vertical stripes during breeding. Hailing from the soft, acidic, and tannin-stained blackwater streams of Peru, the Inca Apisto thrives in a well-structured aquarium with fine sand substrate, leaf litter, and plenty of hiding spots. This generally semi-peaceful species is an excellent centerpiece fish for planted community tanks but becomes territorial during breeding, with the female guarding a secluded cave and the male defending the broader area. A varied, high-protein diet of small frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp is crucial for maintaining their vibrant colors and overall health. These fish must be provided with plenty of hiding areas, otherwise they are very skittish.
