The Apistogramma agassizii 'Double Red' is a highly sought-after dwarf cichlid known for the stunning, vibrant red coloration on the fins of the males. With a slender, elongated body, the male displays rich red and orange fins complemented by iridescent blue, yellow, and violet highlights, while females are less colorful but still attractive, developing a bright yellow with black markings when breeding. In the aquarium, this South American native prefers a soft, acidic, and tannin-stained blackwater environment with a fine sand substrate, plenty of hiding places among driftwood and rocks, and a temperature of 72° to 84°F. Though a curious and personable fish that is generally peaceful, the agassizii becomes quite territorial during spawning, with the male defending the territory and the female guarding her chosen cave. A high-protein diet consisting of varied meaty foods like quality pellets, flakes, and live or frozen brine shrimp and daphnia is excellent to maintain their brilliant color and health.
